  • CHILE (JUNE 2024)

Bordering the west coast of South America, facing the Pacific Ocean, the Republic of Chile stretches over 4,300 kilometres, from the arid Atacama Desert in the north to the southernmost point of the continent, Cape Horn, with an average width of 180 kilometres. These long borders make this neighbour of Peru, Bolivia and Argentina an exception, and not the 'neoliberal laboratory' to which it is too often reduced. Five years after the estallido social of 2019, which paved the way for the revision of the Constitution dating from the Pinochet era, hopes were dashed as the status quo finally prevailed twice, with the referendums of 2022 and 2023 both resulting in the rejection of new Constitutions, a progressive version (2022) and a conservative version (2023). Chilean architects are convinced that architecture is a way of making the future 'desirable' once again.
